Did you know that sand is a rock made up of very small, crumbly particles with a diameter of just 0.063–2 millimeters? Sand can be made up of various minerals, and sometimes even of a single mineral. In Anykščiai we find a particularly interesting type of sand – quartz sand, which is very pure and has special properties. However, the most interesting question is how and when it was formed and why can this unique sand be found in the Anykščiai area? How much of it is there in this region, how does it differ from sand on the Baltic coast, and what importance does it have for our everyday lives?
We will be able to explore this topic in detail through one of two educational programs that will reveal the secrets and history of sand.
- The first education – at the Anykščiai Regional Park Visitor Center
We will visit the park visitor center exposition, where we will learn about sand and other natural and cultural values of Anykščiai Regional Park. Together with a guide, immerse yourself in the world of sand and discover how different types of sand are formed and what impact they have on our land. Later, we will travel to the conference hall, where we will perform interactive tasks: we will draw with sand, weigh and sift sand, try to create an hourglass and, of course, look at sand through a microscope. We will see the structure of sand and its various particles, find out what makes it unique. We will also watch a film about the history of Anykščiai quartz sand and learn how this sand is used in various industries. If you wish, education can also take place outdoors - in the courtyard of the visitor center, where we will be able to experience sand directly. - The second education – a trip to the outcrops and quartz sand quarry of Anykščiai Regional Park
This is a trip to the outcrops of Anykščiai Regional Park, where you can see with your own eyes how layers of quartz sand emerge. This is a great opportunity to look at the process of sand formation in nature and learn how this sand reveals geological history. Later, we will visit the quartz sand quarry of AB “Anykščių kvarcas”, which is famous for its high-quality sand. We will find out what this factory does and where recycled sand is used - from glass production to other industries. This will be a great opportunity to learn how important and useful this simple, yet important natural product can be.
Both educations will provide an opportunity to look at sand from different angles - both through science and history, and through everyday and industrial applications. This is a great opportunity not only to learn, but also to experience the world of sand firsthand!
