
The Directorate of Protected Areas of Aukštaitija together with the Latvian Jekabpils City Municipality is implementing the 2014–2020 Interreg VA Latvia-Lithuanian Cross-Border Cooperation Programme Project No. LLI-477 “Creation of the International Tourist Route “Struve Geodetic Arc”” / STRUVE. The project aims to contribute to the sustainable development of the programme area, to help it become an attractive and competitive place to live, work and visit.
The tourism campaign "Discover the Struve Geodetic Arc!" is designed to introduce the scientific achievements of the 19th-20th centuries. The goal of this campaign is to create an International Route designed to attract tourists who want to learn and explore the history of science, expand their knowledge, and are ready to try and explore unknown places.
There are a total of 18 Struvė Arc points in Lithuania, three of which are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, and there are 16 Struvė Geodetic Arc points in Latvia,two of which are on this list.Most of the points of the Struvė geodetic arc are not easily accessible, there are no modern, attractively adapted expositions, but some points are adapted for visiting and are worthy of visitors' attention.
During the tourism campaign "Discover the Struvė Geodetic Arc!", visitors are invited to visit 4 countries (Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Finland), collect stamps and win special promotional souvenirs.
